Many vacationers have transitioned to renting homes or condos for their summer or winter getaway. No matter where you rent, there are a few things you shouldn’t accept when renting for a short stint. Mainly, the place should be clean, uncluttered, full of light, and deliver what it promises in the brochure. To ensure that you get what you pay for, here’s a renter’s guide for vacationers.

-Less is more. The home or condo for rent should be tastefully decorated but not overstuffed. With fewer items in the house, you can enjoy the space and make it your own for the vacation time you have. The house should include the bare essentials of furniture, but little more. It shouldn’t include knick knacks or pictures, or worse, life-size animals on the tables and walls.

-Ask what is included. Ask and get in writing to bring with you what is included in the rental place. Check if they offer silverware and kitchen items or any other items you want such as a grill or deck furniture. This will help you know what to bring with you and prevent unnecessary trips to the store to get things together when you arrive.

-Look at lots of pictures. There should be at least 8 to 10 photos of the house’s interior and exterior views. With the use of the internet, most retail agents must include lots of photos to show renters the exact property they are getting. Some websites even show 360 degree views or HD slide shows that have clear pictures of the property. Ask for more pictures if there aren’t enough pictures or if you want a specific view, such as the “ocean view.”

-Determine the costs of the area. If you’re going to a popular or ritzy location like the Hamptons, you can expect to pay thousands more than a smaller home in a less-known location. To save a little money, try an Arizona cabin rental or a condo near a deserted beach in Florida. The season you travel will also affect the price, as holidays and summer bring in more travelers and elevated prices.

-Determine the location. Is the vacation property near restaurants, grocery stores, shopping, or other activities? Is it in a remote location or on the main road? Is it in a safe area? The location makes a big difference in the quietness of the property, as well as what you pack. If you want a quiet family spot or romantic getaway, pick a rental that only rents to families or couples. If you’re single and looking for a fun vacation with some friends, you probably want a more central location where you won’t mind the partying in the area.
